The American School of Doha (ASD) is a secure and stimulating environment serving over 2,000 students from Pre-Kindergarten through Grade 12, dedicated to helping every student reach their full potential. ASD recently initiated a major project to revitalize a key outdoor space, aiming to create a uniquely safe and stimulating playground specifically for their Kindergarten students aged 3 to 5. The primary goals were to advance children’s physical, social, emotional, and imaginative development while skillfully integrating the cultural identity of Qatar. The result is a recreational space that also serves as an artistic, educational environment connecting young students to Qatar’s profound maritime heritage.
Strategic Planning and Design

Our team—comprising landscape architects, playground experts, and safety specialists—partnered closely with the school to conceive and deliver this exceptional new play area. Through our professional design services, we meticulously scoped every element: the flow, zoning, and layout; amenities and softscapes; safety surfacing, fall zones, and critical shading; play equipment; and hardscaping. All materials were carefully selected based on these detailed plans.
The design concept and recommendations were guided by several unique criteria. Our absolute focus remained on the age and developmental stage of the children, with the ultimate objective of sparking joy and supporting the physical, social, and creative needs of the 3–5 year olds. Furthermore, accessibility, long-term sustainability, and the historical theme were non-negotiable requirements.

Designing for Qatar’s natural desert environment presented specific challenges: the site experiences intense heat and humidity. Therefore, all materials selected had to absorb less heat to ensure comfortable use, and they needed to be exceptionally safe and durable regardless of the harsh conditions. Strategic shading was also paramount, as the west-facing area receives direct mid-day and afternoon sun. Finally, the playground’s long, narrow shape required an extra dose of creativity to maximize opportunities for high-quality play within the defined constraints.
The Integrated Solution

The completed play space delivers an entirely new world of play for Kindergarten students, built around four central pillars:
- Inclusivity and Access: The design embraces universal design principles, ensuring active and imaginative play is available to all age groups and abilities. The layout prioritises easy supervision for teachers and caregivers, facilitating engagement between adults and students.
- Qatari Heritage: The playground is designed to narrate Qatar’s centuries-old maritime history and origins. Bespoke play equipment revolves around the overarching theme of Al Wakrah Souq, the historic pearling and fishing village. The central, unmistakable feature of the playground is a magnificent Dhow-inspired structure, mirroring the traditional Qatari boats that anchor Al Wakrah’s history.
- Sustainability and Resilience: The project incorporates highly durable play structures and uses environmentally thoughtful site preparation. Existing trees were preserved to provide natural shade (and act as a noise buffer from the adjacent expressway), complemented by “nature play” elements such as sand and water play.
- Safety and Standards: The entire space was designed and constructed to the highest international standards, adhering strictly to New Zealand and UAE guidelines and requirements for quality and safety.
- Function and Fun: Architectural elements provide crucial extra shading, and the compact design is clever and packed with multi-purpose equipment. Children can enjoy an ideal mix of equipment supporting both structured and unstructured play.
