About Brighton College
Founded in 1845, Brighton College is an independent and co-educational school and focuses on the education of 11 to 18-year-olds. The college has been awarded School of the Decade by The Sunday Times and is considered a top UK co-educational school. It has also been awarded top in the country for STEM subjects (science, technology, engineering, and maths).
What were the requirements?
The brief for Brighton College involved the provision of full FF&E design and installation for their science laboratories, prep rooms, and kitchenette. They also required installation of storage facilities for their new build School of Science and Sport facility, home to a collaboration project between both subjects.
What work was completed?
To deliver a high-spec and bespoke project, our partner, Pinnacle, worked with both McLaren Construction and the Office for Metropolitan Architecture. Working together with both parties allowed for any project installations and constructions to achieve a BREEAM excellence standard.
BREEAM is a world-leading validation and certification system for science-based facilities. The validation and certification systems are awarded for sustainable built environments.
The main focus of the work completed at Brighton College focused on their quality science laboratory facilities. All 18 of the college’s university standard laboratories are housed in the new School of Science and Sport building.
Science labs
Our partner, Pinnacle, worked on delivering premium and practical science lab designs and installations for all 18 science labs. A wide range of furniture, fixtures, and equipment was installed to create unique learning spaces for educational success.
Black 200mm SGL bespoke worktops with black fume cupboards, were installed in the science labs. These were combined with ceramic sinks, alongside teacher and student islands. Appropriate safety equipment was also fitted into each lab, including WaterSaver taps, eyewash hoses, and gas taps.
To fulfil the project’s sustainability criteria and achieve the BREEAM requirements, all furniture and fixtures were FSC certified. In all labs, LED lights were also installed into the StorageWall storage solutions.
Artificial lighting was installed in the ceilings, helping provide a modern and university-like aesthetic to each learning space. The lights were complimented with natural light, provided by the views of the historic buildings around the college.
Prep rooms, kitchenette, and sports facility
For the kitchenette and prep rooms, appliances were integrated for staff use.
Within the new Science and Sports facility, semi-transparent illuminated swimming pool lockers were installed.
The designs and installations for Brighton College help to accomplish the best balance for the school’s practicality and the architect’s vision.
