Design and Technology Association (UK) Approved Health & Safety Training Course

This is a practical course that is designed to enable the attendee to be secure in their own ability on machines and tools, understand set up and standard maintenance. The Health & Safety training is designed to ensure that the trainee is made aware of all the present regulations and standards that are set out for the safe use of machinery in an education establishment.

Who is this course suitable for?

This Health & Safety training course is suitable for DT Technicians, DT Teachers, HODs of DT and art. Anyone who may need to work with the DT machinery in school. Teachers and technicians with no experience or very experienced, will gain from the health and safety in design and technology course, as too will those who wish to renew their certificates validity.

Course Outline

The framework for the course is based on the content of BS4163, (the Design and Technology Code of Practise), PUWER, L114, HSG258 and other documents. The training course will enable the attendee to learn and develop skills in how to use machines in a safe manner as well as how the machine should be set up and the basic maintenance.

During the course attendees will have the opportunity the discuss machine / process application, technique as well as talking with fellow attendees about current issues that are affecting classroom teaching and safe practise. Other areas that the course will cover will be PPE and LEV systems.

On successful completion of the course, attendees will be awarded with the D&TA Accreditation Certification (Digital Format, valid for 5 years).

The course will consist of a selection of the machinery below provided the equipment is available at the host school. Please be aware we have minimum training times on each machine to meet the criteria of the qualification, so there may be a limit to the number of machines and tools which can be covered in each H&S workshop.

Meet your Trainer: Andy Topliss

Andy Topliss is an accomplished educator and former Head of Faculty for Art, Design, Engineering, and Technology, bringing over 20 years of full-time teaching experience. Qualifying from Nottingham Trent University with a first-class degree in Design and Technology with Education, Andy has worked tirelessly as a teacher and middle leader at a range of schools both in the UK and overseas. His work reflects a strong commitment to innovative curriculum design, interdisciplinary teaching, and the integration of creative and technical disciplines.

Before entering education, Andrew served as an Army engineer and later worked as a software consultant—experience that underpins his practical, analytical, and solution-focused approach to teaching and leadership.

Andrew also collaborates with several examination boards as an author, principal examiner, principal moderator, editor, and course writer, contributing to the advancement of high-quality educational assessment and resources. In addition, he is a registered senior consultant in health and safety, ensuring best practice and compliance across professional and educational environments.
